Flower Lands is an interactive, floral experience at Outside Lands Festival located in San Francisco, CA designed to spread joy via fresh cut flowers.
We advocate for local, organic and small flower farmers and florists by handing out free, locally grown flowers and sharing information on sustainable options within the floral industry. Patrons who visit Flower Lands are met with multiple botanical activities that inspire a deeper connection with flowers and those who grow them.
Why Local Flowers?
IMPORT PIT FALLS…
Almost 80 percent of fresh flowers sold in the United States and Canada are not grown in North America. Most commodity flowers sold in the United States are grown in the Global South and transported to customers in Europe and North America. But not by container ship, like the vast majority of imported commodities. Flowers are fragile and highly perishable and must be transferred via refrigerated jets and then by refrigerated trucks. This process generates a massive carbon footprint.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT…
Conventionally, cultivating unblemished flowers requires liberal applications of insecticides and herbicides, and many of those poisons enter the water system (not to mention the skin and lungs of agricultural workers). Imported flowers must be treated with fungicides, as well, to prevent foreign microbes from wreaking havoc on domestic agriculture.
SUSTAINABILITY…
Small Farmers produce their flowers using responsible farming methods like integrated pest management, diverse cropping systems, and low-input fertilization programs. Their farms encourage important biodiversity, soil health, and water conservation. When you purchase local flowers you are not only supporting a vital eco-system, but you are supporting people in your community that are leading the way.
QUALITY + FRESHNESS…
Local farms are ruled by the seasons, which means you will find many varieties that are unique to the growing region and time of year. Ask your favorite flower farmer what is currently growing and discover a spectrum of textures, scents and varieties that aren't available in stores. You can find the freshest, highest quality, heirloom blooms that aren't shipped over seas and last twice as long.

Slow Flowers
The Slow Flowers Movement is a response to the disconnect between humans and flowers in the modern era. It aspires to reclaim the act of flower growing, recognizing it as a relevant and respected branch of domestic agriculture. Slow Flowers connects consumers with the source of their flowers, putting a human face of the flower farmer and floral designer behind each bouquet or centerpiece. The value of local, seasonal and sustainably-grown flowers is heightened when there is transparent origin labeling of all botanicals sold to consumers and professional florists.
Association of Specialty Cut Flowers
The ASCFG was created to educate, unite, and support commercial cut flower growers. It does this by providing production and marketing information; connecting members through events and communications; supporting floriculture research; and encouraging the purchase and use of locally grown flowers by the public. Its mission is to help growers produce high-quality floral material, and to foster and promote the local availability of that product.
Floret Farmer-Florist Collective
Wherever you are in the world, we want to help you find local flowers quickly and easily. Our intention when creating this Collective was to make a directory that is free, inclusive, and accessible on a global level.
The flower farms, florists, and farmer-florists listed here are all part of the global seasonal flower movement. This special Collective is committed to growing, buying, and promoting local flowers.
Gather Flora
Gather Flora is working to bring the selection, convenience, and dependability of the global floral marketplace to local flowers.
Today, Gather Flora operates two showrooms in California in Los Angeles and San Francisco. We support regional hubs and farms in California, Utah, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. We’re always eager to connect with new regions to explore opportunities. Connect with us about your region
